“The property is known as Cleydael and was constructed as a summer home for the influential family of Dr. Richard Stuart. Cleydael is mainly recognized because of its ties to the escape of John Wilkes Booth in April of 1865 after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Booth and his accomplice David Herold made a brief stop at Cleydael for medical assistance from Dr. Stuart but, suspicious of the men, he refused them assistance and shelter and sent them on after feeding them dinner.”
